A lot of what he uses are found old materials, from old shops, flea markets, flotsam from the beach, detritus from the street, or wood left overs from his workshop. All things that have been discarded, that have a history, and in this are much more interesting and valuable than new things which still have to acquire depth and spirit, which are still “flat". These old things may have been thrown away, considered to have lost their value and function, but they have acquired an identity during their journey. They have “lived”. Giving these things a new purpose, Michael recombines them into a new matrix. On some level it’s akin to an exorcism, freeing the objects from the ghosts of the past, letting a new individual emerge. He does not try and negate what they have lived through, they still bear the marks and scuffs of an authentic existence; indeed, that is what makes them so special and unique. It features the iconic "seismic spiral" and a top showcasing the weathered and worked surface of the barrel wood, witness to its long history. Cutting up the boards of Carcavelos Mahogany often reveals the large dowels used to join the massive planks. These holes at times limit the usable length of the wood. But they are also witness to the life and wear these planks have experienced. I've always liked the cross sections of these boards, with some of the holes still filled by a slice of dowel. This wood is old growth, dense and heavy - taking a cue from my Vienna line of hollowbody guitars the one-piece body is extensively carved out to relieve the weight. The top is an assembly of cross sections, laminated together. The shape derives from the "butterfly" shape I've used on many Totemguitars and is echoed by the angular design of the headstock, the original starting point for this piece.
